Ministry in Nairobi, Kenya (July 2019)

SfK made a stop over in Nairobi, Kenya, where another SfK missional business is serving people in Nairobi. Karen Huduma consists of four businesses: a tour company, a guest house, a used car sales business and an automobile repair business.

This business is owned and operated by Kamal, a Kenya-born third generation Iranian, and Margaret, an authentic Kenyan.

Karen Huduma is a missional business in serving the young people in Kibera, the largest urban slum in Africa. In this area inhabited by an estimated one million people, poverty is rampant and so is crime. They live in tin shacks, paying $10-20 a month. They do not have their own bathroom and have to share public bathrooms and public shower facility. Naturally, sexual assault and rapes are frequently occurring. Reportedly, many live with less than $1.00 a day.

Kamal used to work in a Kibera garage when he became a Christian some 19 years ago because he was cut off from his Muslim family. It is common that the Iranian business is closely knitted to the family and relatives. So he experienced the hardship in Kibera first hand and saw the chronic poverty rampant in the area. Thus, he wanted to help out the young people with the auto repair skills. So far, he has helped approximately 50 people by helping them get a job elsewhere or start a new business. Some are still working with Kamal. John Kennedy is one of them.

They live in Embul Bul, which is close to Karen, an affluent area, yet apparent with poverty. They have lived in their current house for the past 14 years. They could have moved else where for a more comfortable surrounding, but Margaret is happy to be around the people in need so that she can serve their inevitable needs.

It is our prayer that Kamal and Margaret will receive God's favor in continuing to serve the people in need around them and beyond. - Jeffrey

Ministry in Rwanda (July 2019)

SfK has a member of its Missional Business Community in Rwanda. It is Nanuri Limited which as a holding company now operates Nanuri Medical Center, Nanuri Guest House and also 2 & 5 Christian Academy.

Nanuri is a mission community consisting of resident members and several volunteers who serve on and off on either short term or long term. The following members are the resident members.

Nanuri Medical Center aims to serve the patients with the internal medicine and pediatrics under the leadership of a medical doctor couple: Dr. Park, the physician and Dr. Baek, the pediatrician. They went into operations in March so it is still going through the early learning curve and it is premature to establish the sustainability. SfK helped secure some institutional clients for their quality medical services. SfK also led a devotion time with the staff of Medical Center, which takes place twice a week. It is our prayer that they will develop an exemplary missional practice model in the tough health care industry.

Nanuri Guest House has 18 rooms with excellent hardware and quality furnishings. Moreover, they intend to provide excellent services un-parallel to any similar facilities available in town. Thus, there is no doubt that this guest house will also become popular in the City of Kigali.

Nanuri also operates 2 & 5 Christian Academy in collaboration with a Christian denomination. After several years of operations, it now has more than 200 students from K to 6, and the first graduates will take the national exam, a critical stepping stone towards establishing an outstanding Christian education institution in the City of Kigali.

Sfk helped in the area of administrative and financial management. Click here to see a video clip showing how 2 & 5 Christian Academy operates.

We pray that Nanuri businesses will adopt and implement the spirit of missional business as God defined and embedded originally in business as an effective channel of serving people with common good.

SfK spent time with Mr. Ryu who completed SfK's boot camp training in Chiang Mai in 2017. He has since established Kijamii Table, an African cafe restaurant in Kigali, Rwanda. It is a social enterprise and has been in operation for about one year. It still is in the process of figuring out how to achieve operational sustainability while not compromising on empowering young people. Its unique focus on providing African foods while others are trying to do business with foreign foods was somewhat peculiar, but it may be more suitable to establish African sustainability by Africans. It is our prayer that Kijamii Table become sustainable and expand into other nations.

Rwanda remains an impressive developing nation as a reformation model in Africa. May it continue its track record. - Jeffrey

Ministry in Arusha, Tanzania (July 2019)

SfK held its boot camp training in Arusha, Tanzania in July. SfK Tanzania hosted the event at Mianzi Retreat Center that it operates.

SS and Youngsoon Kim minister the Tanzanias through this center. SfK Tanzania also carries out One Egg Project in feeding young children with one egg per day in a sustainable manner.

The number of participants turned out to be smaller than expected, but they were eager to learn and put the learned knowledge and skills into practice. We have identified one potential member of SfK Missional Business Community. May the Lord nurture this business according to His will!

We also served with the Word of God at Arusha Vineyard Church and Arusha Korean Church. Pastor David Owens is shepherding Arusha Vineyard Church. He used to be a flight attendant while he was pastoring a church. He has a wholistic view of work and business, and we could be great partners for our mutual ministry.

SfK Tanzania will work with Arusha Vineyard Church in its leadership training with BAM. - Jeffrey

Ministry in South Asian Nation (July 2019)

SfK participated in a joint ministry in this nation where Christians are often persecuted together with JES from the U.S. The event was carried out in the name of PBC 2019.

All who participated in ministering to these brothers and sisters were truly men and women of God who were willing to travel and dedicate their time and talents for the cause.

We provided plenary education and training in the afternoon and evening on business management skills and stewardship. SfK gave two lectures about Good Stewardship and Faithful Stewardship.

We also visited in the morning many businesses and a few ministries that endeavor to achieve sustainability through businesses.

They were eager to learn and passionate to improve their business management skills.

SfK held a separate meeting with a dozen businessmen and business professors to see if they are interested in hosting SfK MBA boot camp training.

From this group of people, a few businesses expressed their desire to be part of SfK Missional Business Community. SfK is pursuing further with one of them, which employs 80 employees. Please pray that this potential opportunity may develop into a relationship where equipping and empowering may take place. - Jeffrey

- JULY 2019 -

"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love."
(Galatians 5:13)
THE CALL TO SERVE

The following is a June 25, 2018 devotional by Dr. Charles Stanley, founder of In Touch Ministries and New York Times best-selling author.

Galatians 5:13

Jesus commanded that we serve one another, but obeying this is not natural for us. Sure, there are times we like to help others. But service that involves self-sacrifice—especially for someone we deem undeserving—is much more difficult to do.

What does it mean to serve? Consider Christ’s example. He gave up everything in heaven to live among us, subjecting Himself to dishonor and human frailty. And He loved even those who rejected Him. Think about how He humbled Himself and washed the disciples’ feet at Passover. This was a disgusting, lowly task that a slave might be assigned—far from anything a king should do. He even knew these men were about to abandon Him but served them anyway.

Ultimately, Christ gave His life for us. And He did so while we were still sinners (Rom. 5:8). Serving others was His lifestyle—part of who He was and what He did. As His followers, we should strive to be like Him.
