The High and Holy Calling of Business and Breaking the Sacred-Secular Divide by Jo Plummer,Business as Mission Blog, Nov. 04, 2021 The business as mission community is contributing to a wider ‘listening process’ in the global evangelical mission community as part of our connection the Lausanne Movement. Lausanne asked us: What are the most significant gaps or remaining opportunities toward the fulfillment of the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20)? We in turn received input from 25 global leaders on this question especially as it relates to business as mission. Four main themes emerged as leaders answered this question, which we will share in four blog posts through November. The first theme was the need to continually break down the sacred-secular divide and affirm the high and holy calling of business. This is, as it turns out, is also foundational to all the other themes and consistently comes up in lists of priority issues for business as mission. To learn more about what the sacred-secular divide is and why and how we work to break it down, please read this introductory blog by Mike Baer. ___________________   Theme 1: The High and Holy Calling of Business and Breaking Down the Sacred-Secular Divide Specifically in the context of BAM, I see a couple challenges that I believe we can address in the near future. One is the continued lack of the global church embracing the high and holy calling of business. This lack restricts the enlistment of disciple makers in business as mission, limits the equipping for this work by the church to church-centric training, and prevents the next generation from seeing the potential of working in business as a venue for global evangelism. MB From the perspective of the church, a huge gap remains the theological marginalisation of work as a sacred act of worship in the understanding and behaviour of Christians in their everyday context. Ministry still remains largely defined in “church-type” terms, and “ministers” still remain largely a professional “class” in the minds of most avowed Christians. This must continue to be addressed. CS The biggest opportunity to fulfill the Great Commission is in the marketplace. It’s the Body of Christ in the workplace. The Church in the workplace. We need to change the view of church away from Sunday and towards the business week. DAS In order to quicken the pace to realize the vision of Matt 28:18-20, it is imperative to mobilize all believers to participate in the effort intentionally. “The Church” should practice for real the “priesthood of all believers” and no longer just rely on the clergies and the “professional staff” in ministry. ALL believers need to be mobilized to share the good news and to become disciple-makers from day one when they themselves become Christians. They need to be told that their own testimonies plus the power of the Word, together with the power of prayer would be sufficient, and they are already given the power and authority to do so through the Holy Spirit. With such a conviction, we would have “priesthood” Kingdom workers in all walks of life already pre-positioned to spread the good news and bring transformation. Moving Toward Redemptive Action by Jon Hart, Feb. 25, 2020 Praxis Lab Journal Three moves to put your faith into action, wherever you are, throughout your vocational life.   Recently, I had the privilege of speaking with several audiences at a liberal arts college. I began my talks by posing a question: “What is going on in the world?” The first answer (from students) came quickly and definitively: “chaos.” Later that day, I offered the same question to a group of professors, and sure enough, the first answer: “chaos.” If that was the sentiment on a beautiful, serene campus where the primary work is to teach and to learn, we shouldn’t be surprised how true it feels everywhere — in our work, in our communities, in the news we absorb everyday, and (especially) in the wilds of social media. We’re experiencing a growing collective helplessness that the problems we face in our world are increasingly complex and we don’t know where to turn for solutions. In the face of this sense of powerlessness amidst chaos, I believe that now more than ever, each of us needs a robust vision for how our work can be a vehicle for redemptive possibility: to bring a little more beauty and justice into places of brokenness and harm, and to bless others in the process. In fact, in the six years since starting Praxis Academy — our work with next-generation founders, builders, and creatives — I’ve had the privilege of working with hundreds of college students and recent graduates asking important questions about their vocational choices: How can I have the most impact? How can I make use of the gifts God has given me? How can I learn what it is “really like” to express my faith through my work in my chosen field? Are some fields or professions more redemptive than others? Should I start my own venture or join one? Can I work redemptively and entrepreneurially if I’m not a founder, or (especially) if I’m trying to move up in a large organization? Click to read more...  Ministry Updates    SfK MB Community - SfK held several gatherings in Busan and Geoje with SfK Kingdom Fellows and fellow Kingdom workers.  Please pray that these relationships will continue to strengthen to serve together for greater Kingdom impact.  SfK MB Academy - BMT 2021 continued with four sessions about Operations, Accounting and Finance, Organizational Behavior, and Marketing. SfK MB Academy - Post BMT continued with two additional two participants presenting their cases.  SfK MB Academy - Mini BMT with Bethel Church in Irvine California continued with both teams having chosen their projects.   SfK Network - SfK participated in the 2021 IBA Leaders Forum to reflect on the past with a new perspective, and in the 2021 IBA Digital Conference to present SfK's BMT program. opportunities.  Upcoming Events  1. SfK MB Academy - BMT 2021 will be completed in November. Please pray that all participants will finish well until the end. 2. SfK MB Academy - Post BMT will continue with two participants presenting their cases to seek collective consultation. Please pray that peer learning will empower all participants.  3. SfK MB Academy - Mini BMT with Bethel Church in Irvine California will continue with two teams preparing to present their projects. Please pray that their teamwork will bear fruit that will equip them for the next steps. 4. SfK MB Academy - BMT 2022 English Track is scheduled to commence in January 2022 to last for 16 weeks, which will equip participants from five countries. Please pray that this new program will prepare the participants for the next steps in their missional business journeys.  5. SfK MB Community - SfK is establishing a partnership with a Korean mission agency to provide a channel for some members of SfK MB Community to receive donations for their missional business ministries. Please pray that the efforts to iron out details will produce a useful and helpful relationship for those in need. 6. SfK MB Trading - SfK continues its efforts to establish an e-commerce platform, called shop4impact.com. Please pray that the plan to launch it in February will progress as scheduled with all 7 members working harmoniously well.  7. SfK Network - In November, SfK will participate in Korean Global Mission Leaders Forum (KGMLF) to be held in Pyeongchang, S. Korea. Please pray that all participants will be blessed by learning from and edifying each other.    8. SfK Network - In November, SfK Life will hold an online board meeting and SfK Korea will hold an in-person board meeting. Please pray that the meetings will be fruitful in a way that is pleasing to God.   Thank you for standing with us in prayer and support in equipping and empowering missional businesses in Asia and Africa. .   .   . Business is a Calling; it is a Gift; it is a Ministry by Larry W. Sharp, IBEC Ventures Blog, 5/28/2021   “God did not call me to be a minister or a missionary; He called me to be a businessman – and I see no difference.” (Michael Cardone of Cardone Industries) I have recently been contracted to write a couple of courses for a Christian college in Canada.  One of the courses is to be entitled “Theology of Business.”  I have taught workshops on this subject by spending an hour or two, but a 36-hour college credited course is something different, especially when I am not an expert on the subject.  I have been reading and studying the scriptures as well as what learned men and women have to say on the subject. For many people ‘theology’ and ‘business’ are compartmentalized into two segments: secular and sacred with very little or no connectivity to each other.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  Silicon Valley entrepreneur, Ken Eldred, asserts that the real goal of business is to serve people to the glory of God.  Business serves people by creating wealth (Deut. 8:18) and God who is the creator of all things gives mankind the ability to do so.  Theology and business are inherently linked from the Cultural Mandate in Genesis chapters 1 and 2 (where God gave Adam a job to do) until today. Click to read more...  Ministry Updates    MB Academy - SfK continued to hold its BMT 2021 in September with training sessions about transformation, strategy, operations, and accounting finance.  MB Academy - SfK held its September session for Post BMT.  MBA Academy - SfK began its 12-week Mini BMT for Bethel Church in Irvine, California. The first three weeks covered two strategy sessions and one session about how to prepare a business plan. MB Trading - Joybells America, SfK's trading arm in the U.S., held a special in-person board meeting in September. A few important decisions have been made and follow-up actions will be taken during the rest of 2021.  MB Trading - Hesed Global in Korea conducted a special joint campaign with a few Christian ministries to promote their products during the Korean Chuseok Full Moon Festival. The performance was less than expected, but it was a blessing nonetheless. MB Fund - SfK reviewed and provided feedback on an updated business plan for a pig farming project in The Republic of Georgia.  MB Fund - SfK reviewed and provided feedback on a chicken feed manufacturing expansion project in a K nation in Central Asia. SfK Network - SfK held a separate meeting with the leadership of Ezekiel Mission Fund and of KBM Global in Korea to explore the possibilities of ministry opportunities.  Upcoming Events  1. MB Academy - SfK continues its online BMT 2021 with five sessions to be conducted with each session consisting of two video lectures and two hours of live training time. Please pray that all participants will learn from each other as well as from the training to better serve God and people through missional businesses.    2. MB Academy - SfK will continue to hold its monthly Post BMT session with two participants to present their cases for collective consultation. Please pray that all members take advantage of this priceless peer learning opportunity.  3. MB Academy - The Mini BMT in Irvine California continues in October with four training sessions. Please pray that all participants will benefit from the program for their missional life journey.  4. SfK Network - SfK will participate in Korea's IBA Leaders Forum in October as a keynote speaker and IBA BAM Conference in November to demonstrate SfK's BMT program. Please pray that this collaboration will be informative and encouraging to the participants.  5. SfK Network - SfK will participate in the Korea Global Mission Leaders Forum (KGMLF) to be held in November as a responder to a case study. Please pray that this gathering will lead to new ministry and collaboration opportunities for the greater glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.  6. SfK Network - Neo Moravian House, a training arm for IBA in Korea, will begin its 2021 training program from Nov 4 - Dec 4, 2021. If you are interested in this program, please contact as shown in the attached poster. Please pray that this training will help equip more BAMers as needed in the mission field.   7  MB Academy - SfK is planning to hold its English version of BMT 2022 starting January 2022. This training session already has a sufficient number of participants from three countries. Please pray that the preparation would be well done to maximize the equipping effect for the participants.  8. MB Fund - SfK is restructuring its investment in Glen Africa in Tanzania to suit the local needs. Please pray the decision will be aligned with God's will and the outcome will be mutually edifying.    9. MB Trading - SfK is launching an online impact trading platform (shop4impact.com) with 50 products from 9 countries. The launching time has been postponed to early 2022. Please pray that the preparation would gain God's favor and see progress along the way.  10. MB Community - Several members of this Community are still suffering directly and/or indirectly from the COVID-19.  Some still are sick; others are recovering; some others are suffering from side-effect even after recovering from the virus infection. Moreover, most of them are still struggling to weather the economic and social damage from the pandemic. Please pray that the Lord will uphold them with His righteous right hand and strengthen their back to be able to carry the burden of challenges during this difficult time.      Thank you for standing with us through prayer and support, particularly during this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, in our ministry of equipping and empowering missional businesses in Asia and Africa. .   .   .
