"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, and the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men's sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ's ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ's behalf: Be reconciled to God."
(2 Corinthians 5:17-20)

December is a time to prepare ourselves in celebration of the first advent of Christ, the Anointed One, who appeared as Jesus of the Nazareth. His advent was according to God's promise to send a Savior to His people. Glory to God and peace to the world!

His first advent was not for glory, however, but to suffer, die, and pay the price for the sins of all humanity. It was God's way to reconcile the world to Himself, which was beyond anyone's imagination. Praise and honor to Him and Him alone!
At the same time, His advent is God's promise and reminder that Christ will come again on the Day of Christ. When He returns, He will no longer come as a slain lamb but as the Lion of Judah and the King of kings. What a promise!
God's own act of reconciliation to bring peace to the world demonstrates His commitment to the message of reconciliation for His believers to share with the unbelieving world. God has given His followers a responsibility to be ambassadors of Christ.

In this season of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, God's precious gift to the world, all missional entrepreneurs should remember His holy calling to be ambassadors of Christ in reconciling the world to Him through the businesses they run.

With the clear understanding of the profound meaning of Christmas, this season's greetings will be as meaningful as it was intended to be.

Merry Christmas!

MINISTRY UPDATES

1.  "God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called." How genuinely true this statement rings!  He has been so faithful in qualifying SfK Ministries by sending intellectual and financial resources to strengthen its weaknesses. Mark Russell is the newest addition that God has sent to SfK Ministries. Mark will join the board of directors of SfK Life Corporation from 2017.

Mark Russell is the founder and CEO of Russell Media, also known as Elevate Publishing and Catalyst Publishing, an innovative and entrepreneurial publishing firm. Mark is a seminary-trained minister and a scholar in the BAM ecosystem. He received a Ph.D. from Asbury Theological Seminary and Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. His Ph.D. thesis was on the topic of BAM. Recently, he has published a book, "The Missional Entrepreneur," that describes the principles and practices for Business As Mission, which is only one of 60 publications he has been involved in.

We are thrilled to have him join us as a member of the board of directors at SfK Life Corporation. Praise the Lord!

Dr. Mark Russell

For all BAM practitioners or would-be BAMers, Mark's book is a must-read.

2.  Also, Dr. Tetsunao (Ted) Yamamori has agreed to serve as Advisor to SfK Ministries. He was formerly global CEO for Food For the Hungry for 17 years and is a pioneer in BAM movement and Diaspora Mission. His rich experiences and wise insights would help guide SfK Ministries to remain on the right path.

Dr. Ted Yamamori
3.  Finally, our efforts to building a cloud-based database are coming to fruition. The first phase of development will soon go into the user acceptance test (UAT) and hopefully it will be up and running in January 2017. We are grateful to Ji Bae, Director of IT, and his team members who have been working relentlessly over the past several months.

4.  Jeffrey Lee visited Denver, Los Angeles and Dallas to meet with several important people groups. His meetings included preaching on Sunday Worship and sharing about SfK Ministries to a small group at Logos Central Chapel in Denver, a gathering of Kingdom Fellows based in greater Los Angeles and meetings with Ted Yamamori, Paul Clayton, SVP of Mission One, Colene Caldwell, Baylor University professor, David Chong, Senior Pastor of New Life Church in Denver, Dr. Brad Strait, Senior Pastor of Cheery Creek Presbyterian Church in Englewood, CO. He also explored possibilities of collaboration in the areas of e-commerce and value chain business to aid missional entrepreneurs in the SfK eco-system. God's grace that was poured upon Jeffrey's trips was beyond description. Glory be to Him only!

5.  The processes of establishing SfK Asia in Chiang Mai, a regional hub for Asian ministries, and SfK Korea plus the first SfK BAM Fund are continuing. Since Jeffrey has relocated his primary residence to Chiang Mai, Thailand, the process is expected to move faster. Please pray for God's favor upon this process.

UPCOMING EVENTS & PRAYER REQUESTS

Please intercede with prayer for SfK Ministries in the following areas:

  • SfK Ministries has begun our Year End Giving campaign via e-mail. This campaign will continue until the year-end. Please pray that the Lord will move the hearts of several visionary donors who share the vision and mission bestowed upon the BAM movement so that sufficient resources will be provided for SfK Ministries.

Amen!

"Dear Children, let us not love with words or tongue, but with actions and in truth."
(1 John 3:18)

Eros love is emotion. It is based on chemistry and feeling.

Phileo love is brotherly comrade that produces affection.

Agape love is action based on willful choice to love and will to love anyway. It is willful and volitional, hence sacrificial and unconditional.

God's love for humanity, created in His own image, is agape love. His love for us is manifested in many ways, which ultimately culminated into the cruel and painful, yet redeeming death of Jesus Christ on the Cross.

All Christians, believers and followers of Jesus Christ are expected to live a life of love, agape love, which marks a clear distinction for Christian believers.

Through Apostle John's letter, the Lord speaks clearly to us [Christians] to love people in action and in truth, regardless if they are lovable or not. Christian love is willful and sacrificial.

Missional entrepreneurs are expected to follow the example of Jesus Christ's love in carrying out their mission of loving and serving their people through business as if they work for the Lord (Colossians 3:23,24). Such ministering attitudes and manners will start to break down walls with a crack here and there in the hearts of people. This could be the spark that begins the conversation of "Who is Jesus Christ?"  It is evangelism. It is mission.

MINISTRY UPDATES

The Lord continues blessing SfK Ministries with His people whom He has raised and used for His Kingdom in different fields.

Rev. Danny Kim, M.D.
  • Rev. Danny Kim, M.D. will join SfK Ministries as the Vice President of Transformation and Advisory Support effective December 1, 2016. It is God's providence and a tremendous blessing to us at SfK Ministries to have him on board as we prepare for the first year of real ministry operations in 2017. Dr. Kim was a businessman running an international trading business in the Dominican Republic. God called him and he became a medical doctor. Later he was ordained as a pastor as well. He has been serving the Lord as a missionary in Dominican Republic and Haiti for the past twenty years. He has now responded to His calling to serve the missional businesses through SfK Ministries. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Danny Kim to SfK Ministries!
  • Jeffrey spent a week in October in Arusha, Tanzania to assess a missional business in its needs, resources and capacity.  His trip including a day-long training on basic business management skills in addition to a biblical perspective on business as mission. This business with a focus on education, energy and entrepreneurship seems to have great potential for success. The training was timely and fruitful. Praise the Lord!
  • Jeffrey and his wife, Kristin, packed and left Rwanda to begin the process of relocating their primary residence to Chiang Mai, Thailand. They are currently visiting several cities in the U.S. to meet with people, including their two daughters over Thanksgiving, and Kingdom Fellows scattered in Denver and Los Angeles.  They will also minister to churches and other ministries.
  • SfK's database development has changed the course from using Salesforce.com to developing a proprietary solution, and the effort has picked up steam and speed. We aim to have the first UAT before the year-end.
  • The process of establishing SfK Korea and BAM Fund is somewhat slow-going primarily due to challenges coming from meeting certain regulatory compliance requirements. Nonetheless, we are finding ways to meet the requirements and proceed. We are aiming to establish SfK Korea by January 2017.
  • The process of establishing SfK Asia in Chiang Mai, Thailand will pick up steam and speed when Jeffrey lands in Chiang Mai on November 30th.
  • SfK Ministries will launch the year-end funding campaign for the rest of 2016. Friends and family members are encouraged to participate in giving to support SfK Ministries before the year-end. God provides for His anointed ministry and your financial support for such ministry will help you share the joy and demonstrate yourself to be a good steward of God-provided resources.

Newsletter - October 2016

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
(2 Timothy 3:16,17)

A deeply rooted dichotomy of the sacred and secular has made business something less than godly. This view is unbiblical and against God's will. The following article, fromhttp://www.transformationalsme.org, explains what a biblical view of business should look like. (SfK Ministries has permission by the author of this article to re-post in our newsletter). It is an eye-opening read that all missional entrepreneurs should take a look at and gain conviction in their missional businesses.

BUSINESS ACCORDING TO A GLOBAL DICTIONARY OF THEOLOGY

So what is an article on business doing in a global dictionary of theology?** What place does business have in the life and witness of the Body of Christ worldwide? Why should businesspeople take an interest in theology and its practical outworking as they ply their trade? These questions go to the heart of a persistent struggle waged by the church throughout history.
  1. Business in a global context
Economic issues rank high on the agenda for much of the world. For good or ill, commercial priorities and the behavior of business leaders are shaping global events, in some notable cases, far beyond the capacity of traditional centers of influence, such as governments, to control or match. In many countries unemployment is rampant; even the solutions to other apparently unrelated issues, such as HIV/AIDS or traffic in human beings, involve a business oriented response. The church must choose between responses of ambivalence, antagonism, or positive engagement with business in its holistic understanding of the gospel.
  1. Foundational theological concepts
Theological reflection on business is part of a larger set of issues including debate over distinctions between sacred and secular, the nature of work and ministry, and, in the missiological arena the nature and role of so-called “tentmaking”, of which business is generally taken to be a subset. An important overarching concept is the prophetic call to love justice, practice kindness, and walk humbly with God (Mic 6. 8). The vexing issue of profit is addressed in scripture. Many of Jesus’ own teachings use business examples, often favourably, to illustrate ultimate truth.
  • The Person of God
It might be said that God is the original entrepreneur. Beginning with an idea, and creating that which was good in all respects, God reveals His Person, and shows us an essential outlook on life (Gen. 1.1 – 2.3). Furthermore, the central business activity of providing meaningful and sustainable employment is a demonstration of justice and kindness, grounded in the character of God.
  • The Power of the Gospel
Alongside of proclamation is the need to demonstrate the transforming power of the gospel to a skeptical world. From the “thief who steals no more” (Eph. 4. 28) to the executive who “provides what is right and fair” (Col. 4.1) modeling successful business, based on God’s truth and prayerfully led by the Spirit, is a tangible and irrefutable witness.
  • The Priesthood of all Believers
The “ecclesia”, the people of God, are found on the shop floor, in factories, and other work settings. Especially in countries where suspicion and hostility to the gospel is strong, the most natural and credible opportunities to evangelize and make disciples are often found among employees, suppliers and customers of businesses led by committed Christians.
  • The Practice of Stewardship
In contrast to conventional wisdom, the Christian affirms that business does not exist to maximize shareholder wealth, but by the permission of God and to be a channel of blessing to others. This leads to a number of considerations concerning the proper direction and use of all that God gives us, including the gifts of time and talent represented by employees, the earth’s resources, the very products and services produced, and the profit which accrues. These concerns are foremost in the thinking of the faithful steward.
  1. Historical perspectives
Beginning with the story of Abraham, including the account of the worthy woman of Prov. 31, and culminating with the record of Priscilla and Aquila (Acts 18), entrepreneurs hold an important place in the unfolding of God’s purposes. In the Middle Ages, the Nestorians carried the gospel along the Silk Road as they conducted business on East-West trade routes. The influence of the Moravians and Basel entrepreneur missionaries of the 18th and 19th centuries was far-reaching. The Norwegian entrepreneur, Hans Nielsen Hague (1771 – 1824) represents a dramatic example of the power of business in the hands of a committed Christian to literally transform an entire society. Far from being on the fringes of God’s global purposes, business has often played a central role. With this historical perspective in mind, the challenge of our day is in many respects to recover and implement afresh this exciting heritage.
  1. Business as a multidisciplinary exercise
For the church worldwide to effectively embrace business as a vocation for its membership the collaboration of those with of a wide range of skills and spiritual gifts will be required. For example, because the practice of business takes place in a cultural context, anthropological perspectives are necessary. Similarly, the contribution of ethicists, economists, environmentalists, historians, journalists, lawyers, missiologists, sociologists, and others will add value to the more classic “business” competencies of finance, product development, marketing, and human resources. Chief among the spiritual gifts required will be courageous prophets, envisioned pastors, and authoritative teachers, if those saints who are called to a ministry of business are to accomplish this with Christ-honouring accountability, affirmative equipping, and adequate resourcing for the task.
  1. Current trends
There is a global movement of the Spirit in connection with business. Virtually every country in the world and every part of the Body of Christ is being touched. Perhaps most significantly, individual believers with business skills are being awakened to the potential involvement they can have in furthering the Kingdom of God in the business arena. In 2005, a gathering of over seventy representatives from every continent met in connection with the Lausanne Consultation in Thailand to focus on business as a missional activity for the church. Emerging across the world in at least a half dozen regions, many of which are economically poor and where the church is in a small minority, are consultations of entrepreneurs, business professionals and others engaged in the issues of business for the greater glory of God. Spanning the globe are Christian business ministries to executives and employees with a calling to the higher purposes of God. All this represents a genuine sign to the people of God, and to the world, of the Kingdom in our midst.
